Comprehensive Eye Exams in Cambridge, ON

The exam that looks after everything.

A comprehensive eye exam is a full assessment of your vision and eye health — typically 30 to 45 minutes — that screens for conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration before symptoms appear. At Boardwalk Eye Care it’s done by Dr. Sarah Fong, O.D., serving Cambridge and the surrounding Waterloo Region.

What to expect

What happens in your exam

If it’s been a while, here’s the whole visit — thorough, unhurried, and explained in plain language.

  1. Booking & intake

We start with your history and any current concerns — what you’ve noticed, how your eyes feel, and what matters for your work, screens, and lifestyle.

  2. Preliminary testing

Quick, comfortable measurements (such as vision and eye pressure) that build a clear baseline before you see the doctor.

  3. Doctor examination

Dr. Fong examines your vision and the health of your eyes in detail, taking the time to understand the full picture — not just your prescription.

  4. Results & next steps

You’ll go over what was found in plain language, with clear recommendations. If glasses are the answer, our optical team can help you choose — and anything that needs monitoring gets the right follow-up.

Tests may include

  • Visual acuity
  • Eye-muscle coordination
  • Intraocular pressure (tonometry)
  • Slit-lamp exam
  • Retinal imaging
  • Up-to-date prescription

More than vision

Why regular eye exams matter

A routine exam is one of the most effective ways to catch eye conditions early — often before you’d notice a change yourself. To do that with confidence, we rely on advanced diagnostic technology, including high-resolution retinal imaging.

  • Glaucoma

Often develops silently, with no early symptoms — routine pressure and health checks help catch it sooner.

  • Diabetic eye changes

Diabetes can quietly affect the blood vessels in the eye, which a thorough exam can help detect.

  • Macular degeneration

Age-related changes to central vision are easier to monitor and manage when found early.

  • Signs of broader health

The eye is the one place we can see blood vessels directly — so an exam can surface clues to wider health concerns.
