Myopia Management in Cambridge, ON

More than stronger glasses every year.

Myopia management is a set of treatments that slow how quickly a child’s nearsightedness gets worse — not just a stronger prescription each visit. At Boardwalk Eye Care it’s guided by Dr. Sarah Fong, O.D., with a personalized plan for your child, serving Cambridge and the Waterloo Region.

Why it matters

Why managing myopia is worth it

Myopia isn’t only about needing glasses to see the board. The level a child reaches shapes their eye health for life — which is why slowing it down matters.

50%

of the world’s population projected to be myopic by 2050

~42%

of people in North America affected today

As screens and close-up work fill more of the day, more children are becoming short-sighted, starting earlier and progressing faster. It matters because the level a child reaches is linked to their lifetime risk of serious, sight-threatening eye disease — shown here.

Progression is often fastest through the school-age and teenage years — the window where management can make the biggest difference.

For parents

Signs your child may be short-sighted

Children rarely say their vision is blurry — they assume everyone sees the way they do. These everyday signs are worth a closer look.

  • Squinting to see far away

Narrowing the eyes to bring distant objects — a TV, a sign, a teacher’s board — into focus.

  • Sitting very close

Moving right up to the television or screen, or lowering their head close to a tablet.

  • Holding things close

Bringing books and devices unusually near to the face to read comfortably.

  • A family history

A child is more likely to become short-sighted when one or both parents are, too.

Even without obvious signs, a regular comprehensive eye exam is the most reliable way to catch myopia early, when there’s the most room to act.

The options

Ways we slow myopia

Myopia control isn’t one-size-fits-all. Dr. Fong matches the approach to your child — and combines them when it helps.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Custom lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the cornea, giving clear vision through the day with no daytime glasses or contacts — and helping slow progression.

Explore Ortho-K

Myopia-control contact lenses

Soft daytime lenses designed to correct vision and signal the eye to slow its growth — a good fit for active, sporty kids.

Myopia-control glasses

Spectacle lenses that look like ordinary glasses but use a special design to help slow how quickly myopia advances.

Low-dose atropine drops

A prescription eye drop, used at a low concentration at bedtime, that research has shown can help slow myopia progression in children.

Which option suits your child depends on their age, prescription, and lifestyle — Dr. Fong will walk you through what she recommends and why.

At home

Habits that help

Treatment does the heavy lifting, but a few everyday habits support healthy distance vision alongside it.

Time outdoors

At least two hours a day outside in natural daylight is one of the simplest things linked to slower myopia progression in children.

The 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes of near work, look at something about 20 feet away for around 20 seconds to give the eyes a break.

A comfortable working distance

Keeping books and screens about an arm’s length away eases the focusing strain of long stretches of close-up work.
