Most comprehensive exams take roughly 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the testing involved. We never rush — the goal is a thorough assessment and time to answer your questions.

Comprehensive eye exams are for everyone — whether you wear glasses or have never needed them. As a general guide, most adults benefit from an exam every one to two years, with children and seniors often seen more regularly. Dr. Fong will recommend a schedule that fits your eyes, your health, and your stage of life.

Yes. A comprehensive exam is about more than how clearly you see. Several important eye conditions develop without any early change in vision, so a routine exam is the most reliable way to protect your long-term eye health.

It depends on your age and your eye health. Children and young people are covered for an annual eye exam up to age 19. Seniors are covered annually if they have an active eye disease, and every 18 months otherwise. Adults between 20 and 64 are covered only when the exam relates to a specific OHIP-insured condition — such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, diabetes, or optic nerve disease. If you are not covered, the exam is a private service and many extended health plans contribute.

A comprehensive eye exam at Boardwalk Eye Care is $154, and that includes digital fundus photography — a detailed image of the back of your eye that helps Dr. Fong track your eye health over time. If your exam is covered by OHIP, we bill that directly instead.

Bring your current glasses or contact lenses, a list of any medications, and any details about your eye history or symptoms. If you have vision benefits, bring that information too so we can help you make the most of it.
